Wrap up warm this winter

Women and shoes are like two peas in a pod; they just go together. Women just can't get enough. The huge success of ‘Sex and the City’ was down to fashion and in particular, the shoes that Carry wore from day to day - Skyscraping heels, once again, made a return to every women's wish list. It doesn't matter what pain we have to go through to walk the five minute 'trek' from our front doors to the bus stop, they made us feel sexy, feminine and powerful. It's not just that stilettos make our legs look longer and leaner, they make us, as a whole, feel hot!

But winter time, with wet, slippery pavements, can wreak havoc on our shoes and our best laid plans of wearing sandals to that dinner date, are thrown to the back of the wardrobe with the shoes. When are bodies are covered up in clothes to keep us warm and dry, there is no point wearing shoes that will leave our feet soaked and soggy.

So, we may just have to accept that sandals, cotton pumps and canvas trainers are best saved for the return of summer. In walks, boots, leather, closed-toe heels and courts. Boots have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years. You can have ankle, calf, knee, over-the-knee or thigh-high boots in pretty much any colour, with or without a heel and made from various materials including leather, plastic and wool.

Ugg boots kicked off a bit of a phenomenon and since then wool and soft material boots that might not keep you dry if there is a monsoon cascading down Oxford Street, but they will definitely keep your tootsies warm. Military and pirate styled boots are also really popular. Buckles, buttons, zips and plaiting all add interest to an otherwise classic style knee or calf high boot.

Another big change is how we wear boots. We now tend to wear them over jeans and trousers and they are not just reserved for wearing with skirts. Ankle boots over jeans or with a skirt is now common place whereas previously, only knee-highs would have been worn with a skirt and ankle boots would have gone under the jeans.

Flat pumps can be casual or smart, depending on the material and style. 'Ballet pumps' are now a staple in any women's wardrobe to wear with trousers or a skirt. You can even get away with wearing smart and sophisticated style pumps in the office without having to wear heels.

But a sexy pair of stilettos will always be the piece de resistance of a women's wardrobe. They instantly transform any women into a goddess that means business and make short, unshapely legs look more like those of Gisele the Brazilian super model.

Check out New Look for one of the best high-street collections of shoes. It has everything from boots to slippers and plenty in between.
